Home Allergy Lab Skin Patch Testing

PostHeaderIcon Skin Patch Testing

Allergen patch tests are used to determine any contact dermatitis or skin reactions in industrial or home environments. A total of 29 substances can be used to determine allergic reactions. Patch tests are started in the allergy lab, and the initial visit typically takes only 30 minutes.

Once the patch test is applied, it is impairative the doctor review your results at least twice (usually 48 and then 72 or 96 hours) after removal of test panels. Avoid getting the patch wet, as this can cause inaccurate test results.

Common Patch Testing Questions:

  1. What is Allergic Contact Dermatitis?
Allergic contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory reaction which occurs after skin contact with an allergen. These substances could be an ingredient in your cosmetics or aftershave, jewlery, handcreams, rubber  boots, etc.

  2. What is T.R.U.E. test?
T.R.U.E. Test is a reliable allergen patch skin test manufacturered by Mekos Laboratories. It's pupose is to assit the doctor in determining whether or not you are allergic to any of the substances included on the test panel. The panel contains 1 control and 23 different substances, all of which are well-known causes of contact dermatitis.

  3. How long will I wear T.R.U.E. test?
We ask that you return after the panels have been on your back for a mimumum of 48 hours. Do not remove panels unless directed to do so by your doctor.

  4. Are there activities I should avoid while T.R.U.E. test is on my back?
Just a few. The most important is to not get the test panel or surrounding areas wet. If the panel does become wet, it may loosen and allow the substances to wash away. For the same reasons, any activity that causes sweat, such as exercising or sunbathing, should also be avoided. If the panel does loosen for any reason, reattach it with a hypoallergenic adhesive tape?

  5. When will my results be read?
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled at the time of patch testing. It is very important that you keep this appointment.

  6. What is the Doctor Looking For?
At each of your next appointments, the doctor will carefully examine the test area for signs of an allergic reaction. These signs typically consist of a rash with swelling, redness, and tiny blisters. Redness alone, however, does not necessarily mean that you have had an allergic reaction.

  7. What should I do if the test area itches or burns?
Itching & burning sensations are common with patch testing. If these symptoms become severe, please call the office. Try not to scratch the area! If you do, the skin may become irritated and itch/burn more.

  8. What is the next step if the test shows that I am allergic to one or more of the substances?
If you are allergic, the doctor will provide information on where you are likely to come in contact with the substance. He will also describe how to best avoice these substances and any possible alternatives.

  9. What does a negative test result mean?
T.R.U.E. test is designed to indentify the 23 most common allergens that cause allergic contact dermatitis. A negative result will minimize the need to restrict your use of substance containing products. Also, a negative result provides valuable infomration to help with diagnosis and treatment of your symptoms.
